Kimberly Michelle Edge

Meet Michelle Edge, a 26 year old Soperton, Georgia native who spent years struggling with back pain.

“I grew up on a farm and probably lifted a lot of stuff I shouldn’t have,” Michelle stated.

In 2009, when she was just 19 years old, Michelle underwent her first back surgery. Things improved for a while, but in 2014 she realized that she would again need to seek treatment for her back pain. Michelle tried chiropractic care, physical therapy, and even injections before meeting Optim’s Dr. Thomas Lawhorne.

Michelle suffered from a lumbar disc bulge, also known as a herniated disc.

“I went to an appointment and was scheduled for surgery within two weeks,” Michelle said. “I had a job that depended on this surgery.”

She arrived at the physician owned Optim Medical Center-Tattnall on April 25, 2016, admittedly nervous because of the recovery process from her first surgery.

“This was totally different,” said Michelle. “I went in and got processed quick, and they even gave me a patch to put behind my ear because anesthesia had made me sick before.”

The nurses and staff were very attentive to Michelle during her recovery process; she was worried about potential side effects of her medication, but the nurses did a great job of explaining everything and putting her at ease.

Since surgery, Michelle has gotten back to doing things she loves. She is currently leading a healthy, active lifestyle. She made the Dean’s List for the first time in her academic career this semester. She hopes to study veterinary medicine after obtaining her bachelor’s degree.

“I gained weight from being immobile. I felt restricted at 26 years old,” she said, “but just last week I walked two miles and I am only seven weeks into recovery.”
